Advice on child protection

Help with Suspected Cases

What is child protection counseling under Sections 8a and 8b of SGB VIII?

If you work with children or adolescents and notice signs that they may be at risk, you are not alone. In Bochum, there is a specialized counseling service for such situations—anonymous, free, and professional.

Who is eligible for counseling?

This consultation is intended for:

  • Youth Services Professionals

  • Professionals bound by confidentiality, such as teachers, doctors, and therapists

  • People who come into contact with children and adolescents in a professional capacity

  • Volunteers in Child and Youth Services

What exactly does the consultation offer?

  • Anonymous case consultation by “professionals with experience in this area” (InsoFas)

  • No report to Child Protective Services—the consultation is intended to assess the situation, not to take on the case

  • Support for Decision-Making: What Should Be Done? What Kinds of Assistance Are Available?

  • Goal: Gain confidence in taking action and respond appropriately

  • Free and flexible—by phone or in person

Why is counseling important?

Assessing whether a child’s well-being is at risk is often a complex matter. The professionals involved usually know the families best and are the first points of contact. However, it is normal to feel uncertain about the assessment or how to proceed. Counseling helps overcome this uncertainty—in a professionally sound and confidential manner.
