Municipal Integration Center

Strengthening education and participation

The Municipal Integration Center (KI) is a central point of contact for integration through education. It supports immigrants, educational institutions and professionals with a wide range of practical, low-threshold and networked services.

What the Goal is?

The KI promotes equal opportunities and social participation. It accompanies children, young people and families with an international history on their educational path - regardless of their origin, language or residence status.

Who is supported?

  • Children and young people with a migrant background

  • Parents and families in transitional and educational situations

  • Teachers, educational staff and school social work

  • Educational institutions, sponsors and associations

What does the AI offer in concrete terms?

  • Initial advice for new immigrant families: support with school selection, registration and orientation in the education system

  • Language support: materials, training courses and concepts for German as a second language

  • Intercultural school development: advice on diversity, anti-discrimination and school climate

  • Parental work: multilingual services, parents' cafés, interpreting services

  • Project work: e.g. "School without racism", "Living democracy", "Strengthening diversity"

  • Education coordination for new immigrants: networking of services and stakeholders

How does the AI work?

The KI is part of a state-wide support program and works closely with schools, government agencies, independent organizations and civil society initiatives. It sees integration as a cross-sectional task - in education, administration and urban society.

Example from practice

A newly arrived family receives initial advice from the KI. The child is placed in an international class and the parents take part in a parenting course. The school is supported by the KI with language and social integration.

Social perspective

The KI helps to ensure that integration is not left to chance. It creates structures that make participation possible - and makes diversity visible and shapeable.
