From nursery to Grundschule

A new phase of life - well accompanied from the start

The transition from daycare to Grundschule is a significant developmental step. Children leave their familiar surroundings and enter a new world with different structures, requirements and caregivers. Daycare centers, Grundschulen and parents/guardians work closely together to make this step a success.

Why the transition is so important

Starting school shapes a child's attitude towards learning. A positive start boosts self-confidence, promotes motivation and facilitates social integration. This is why the transition is not left to chance, but is systematically prepared.

Preparation starts early

The language assessment takes place two years before the child starts school. It shows whether a child is sufficiently prepared for school in terms of language skills. If necessary, targeted language support is offered.

In the last year of nursery, children are increasingly introduced to school routines. These include

  • School-related projects (e.g. numbers, letters, rules)

  • Visits to the Grundschule

  • Joint activities with school children

  • Independence exercises (e.g. getting dressed, keeping tidy)

Cooperation between daycare centers and Grundschulen

A central element is the cooperation between daycare centers and Grundschulen. In so-called cooperation meetings, educational professionals discuss the development of the children - naturally only with the consent of the parents or guardians. The aim is to shape the transition individually and to identify possible support needs at an early stage.
Many Grundschulen also offer taster days or introductory afternoons, where children can gain their first impressions and reduce their fears.

The role of parents and guardians - active support

Parents are the most important caregivers for a child - also during the transition to school. Their attitude, support and confidence in the child's abilities have a direct impact on their self-image.

Tips for parents and guardians:

  • Inform at an early stage: It is helpful to attend information events at the Grundschule and to talk to the daycare center about the child's stage of development.

  • Practicing the way to school: Walking to school together strengthens safety and independence.

  • Encourage independence: The child can take on small tasks - e.g. packing their daycare bag or getting dressed themselves.

  • Talk positively about school: Arouse curiosity, avoid pressure and talk about positive school experiences.

  • Create routines: A regular daily routine with fixed bedtimes makes it easier to adjust to the school rhythm.

  • Seek exchange: Parents' evenings or discussions with professionals offer the opportunity to clarify questions and network.

  • Accept help: If you are unsure, the school, the education authority or the school psychology department can provide advice.

Support and promotion

Not all children start with the same prerequisites. That's why there is a wide range of support available:

  • Support measures for speech or developmental delays

  • Inclusive services for children with special needs

  • School social work and counseling

  • Open all-day school (OGS) with supervision, homework help and leisure activities

These services help to promote equal opportunities and provide the best possible support for every child.

Goal: A safe and motivating start to school

A successful transition creates confidence - in oneself, in the school and in learning. When daycare, school and parents/guardians work together, the start of school becomes a positive experience that lays the foundation for a successful educational biography.
