Democracy education

Foundations for responsible cooperation

Democracy is more than a political system - it is an attitude based on participation, respect and responsibility. The confrontation with these values begins at school. Democracy education means that young people are empowered to actively participate in social processes and help shape their environment.

What does democracy education involve?

Democracy education is a pedagogical concept that goes far beyond political education. It includes:

  • Communicating values: Respect for human dignity, equal rights, freedom of opinion and the rule of law.

  • Promotion of skills: Arguing, listening, finding compromises, making decisions.

  • Spaces of experience: Participation in student representation, class council, project work and school development processes.

Why is democracy education important?

Children and young people grow up in a complex world in which democratic principles are not self-evident everywhere. Democracy education helps them to find their bearings, think critically and take responsibility. They learn that their opinion counts - and that they can make a difference by getting involved.

How is democracy education implemented in schools?

Democracy education takes place in many areas:

  • In the classroom: Discussions, role plays, debates and critical examination of social issues.

  • In everyday school life: Participation in rules, co-design of learning processes, election of representatives.

  • In projects: Collaboration with external partners, participation in competitions and involvement in social initiatives.

What role do teachers and parents play?

Teachers create spaces for participation and promote a culture of open discussion. They accompany processes, provide impetus and strengthen pupils' self-efficacy. Parents support this approach by exemplifying democratic values in everyday family life and talking to their children about social issues.

What is the goal?

Democracy education should enable young people to see themselves as part of a community, take responsibility and actively contribute to shaping a just and open society.

Example of democracy education from Bochum: "School without racism - school with courage" project

The "School without Racism - School with Courage" network is a concrete example of democracy education in action. Schools that belong to this network are actively committed to combating all forms of discrimination and promoting respectful coexistence.

In Bochum, the Municipal Integration Center coordinates the activities and supports the schools in their implementation. A prerequisite for inclusion in the network is a clear commitment: at least 70% of school members must agree in an anonymous vote to work against discrimination in future.

The participating schools regularly carry out projects, organize events and work together with regional and national partners. This is based on a broad concept of racism - discrimination based on religion, origin, gender or sexual orientation is also addressed.

The project strengthens democratic skills, promotes civil courage and creates space for critical debate. It shows how schools can actively contribute to shaping an open and just society.
