Transition from Grundschule to secondary school
The transition from Grundschule to secondary school is an important step in a child's education. In North Rhine-Westphalia, this transition takes place after the fourth grade. The decision has to be made as to which type of school best suits a child's individual abilities, interests and development prospects.
What types of school are there?
In NRW there are several Types of school to choose from, which open up different educational paths:
Hauptschule: Provides a basic general education and prepares students specifically for vocational training. The lessons are practical and geared towards the students' everyday lives.
Realschule: Provides an extended general education and opens up a wide range of opportunities - both for vocational training and for the transition to further education.
Gymnasium: Generally leads to the general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) after eight or nine years and places a strong focus on theoretical and scientific propaedeutic learning.
Gesamtschule: Enables longer joint learning. Combines Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium branches under one roof and opens up individual educational paths.
Sekundarschule: Also offers longer joint learning and various qualifications. This type of school often works together with Berufskollegs or Gymnasien.
How does the decision work?
At the end of the fourth grade, the Grundschulen make a recommendation as to which type of school is suitable for the child. This is based on academic performance, learning behavior and general development. The recommendation is not binding, but is an important guide. It is up to the parents/guardians to decide which type of school to enrol the child in.
Registration at secondary schools usually takes place in February. The exact dates are set by the local authorities and announced in good time. Please bring the current half-year report card, the registration form, the transition declaration, the personal data sheet and, if applicable, the counseling certificate with you when registering! The vaccination record and birth certificate are desirable.
What should I bear in mind when choosing a school?
The choice of a suitable school should not be based on grades alone. The child's learning behavior, interests and social environment are also decisive. Many schools offer open days, information evenings or individual counseling sessions. These opportunities help to get to know the school profile and clarify any unanswered questions.
The distance to the school, accessibility by public transport and the educational concept can also play a role. Some schools have a special focus - for example on languages, natural sciences, music or digitalization.

Support with the election
In addition to Grundschule teachers, counseling services are also available from the school supervisory authority, school psychology services and the careers advice service of the employment agency. The latter also offers guidance on educational issues for younger pupils and their parents/guardians.
Good to know
Even after the change, the educational path remains flexible. It is generally possible to change school type at a later date - for example, if performance changes, new interests or special needs arise. Many schools cooperate with each other to make transitions easier.
